This NHK Taiga drama was broadcast from January 9th to December 18th, 1983. It was broadcast in Korea under the title "Daebang" (Great Ambition) and was very popular.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, who survived the turbulent Sengoku period and laid the foundation for the Tokugawa shogunate's 300-year reign. This is a grand historical drama depicting his tumultuous 75-year life, from his birth to his death!

Based on the historical novel "Tokugawa Ieyasu" by Soichi Yamaoka, adapted for the screen by Mieko Osanai. The story follows Ieyasu, who, after enduring a hostage life in his youth and numerous hardships, cooperates with Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It depicts how he ends the Sengoku period through the Battle of Sekigahara, the Winter Siege of Osaka, and the Summer Siege of Osaka, and achieves the great feat of establishing peace throughout the land. Ei Takita's portrayal of the youthful Ieyasu dispels the conventional image of him as a cunning "tanuki-oyaji" (old raccoon dog) and presents a new, more human Ieyasu. Koji Yakusho plays Nobunaga, who shares popularity with Ieyasu, and Tetsuya Takeda gives a brilliant performance as the unrestrained Hideyoshi, with actresses such as Kaoru Yachigusa, Shinobu Otake, Kimiko Ikegami, and Masako Natsume adding to the glamour.
